When Should Dedicated Server Hosting Be Preferred Over Shared Web Hosting

If you are a small business, a webmaster, or an entrepreneur, you may initially start out with a tiny website with few pages hosted on a shared hosting server. A shared web hosting service may have been performing fine for you for some time, consequently you never thought of migrating to a higher level package throughout that period. What might have been extremely bothersome to you now and again could have been the total amount of downtime that your site had seen while it resided on a shared web hosting server. There might have been yet other occasions when someone had gotten access to your website login details, and erased your website from the server within a matter of minutes. Such issues may not have been that important in the beginning, however, given the recent growth and success that your project is having, you may no longer be able to tolerate them. As a result, there may arise a need later on to consider other hosting options, either because your online business has flourished to the point where shared web hosting cannot support it, or a better feature set is needed over the expansion phase.

One option in stepping up to a better web hosting package may be to purchase a VPS hosting service. This may be fine for some time but as your site continues to grow in size reaching a couple hundred pages, you may look forward to receive millions of hits in a month depending on how vibrant your marketing strategy is. At this stage of the lifecycle of your online project, a dedicated hosting service may seem to be the only lasting solution to carry on the growth of the project. Consequently, you begin considering the acquisition of a dedicated hosting plan, which can give your website the kind of reliability, functionality, ruggedness and top-notch performance that only gigantic businesses have.

The idea of this article is to outline in detail what you may expect from a dedicated hosting server and how it can meet the expanding possibilities of your online venture. The distinguishing features of dedicated web hosting are as follows.

I) Unshared Server
In contrast to a shared hosting server which simply breaks up the storage space into a number of virtual partitions, each of which is disp
1000
ensed to a different client, a dedicated web hosting server is a stand-alone piece of equipment that can be hired from a web hosting company. This offers you the peace of mind that your system resources are not meant to be shared with anyone else, be it the microprocessor, the storage media, or the RAM.

II) Customized Installations As per Requirements
Another advantage is that custom software may be installed on the server.

III) Complete Control over Access Rights
User level access may be granted by the administrator as well, which means that the users may also be able to use the programs in parallel.

IV) Suitable for High Traffic Websites
Another reason in support of a dedicated hosting server is that it is perfect for high traffic sites. This is because of the fact that there is usually no upper maximum on the total amount of bandwidth for a site hosted on a dedicated server.

V) Option to Customize As per Requirements
You are able to customize the server as per your needs, in addition to installing any custom applications. The ability to alter the server is usually unlimited in the case of many dedicated server hosting providers.

VI) Add Additional Features As Required
With a dedicated web hosting package, you may choose any of the available features in order to get the required configuration.

VII) Choice of OS
One of the main advantages of dedicated server hosting is that it gives you the ability to choose the right Operating System on which your programs can be run. Two fundamental OSs namely Windows and Linux Red Hat are usually offered by a huge majority of dedicated hosting providers.

VIII) A Diverse Range of Control Panels to Choose from
As far as the selection of the control panel is concerned, the two most popular brands offered by a big majority of providers include CPanel and Plesk. Although CPanel is the more widely used one, Plesk is also admired for a number of reasons and functions that are not present in CPanel.

IX) Reliable Service
Another reason for thriving businesses to prefer a dedicated hosting package is that it is extremely stable. The short response time of the installed programs is another distinguished feature of a dedicated hosting server, which is again because the server resources are not shared among multiple users.

X) Unrestricted Bandwidth Ensures Lightning Speed
A dedicated server guarantees that the bandwidth to and from your website will be consistent, because of the fact that the bandwidth is reserved for that particular server. A direct result of this will be that visitors requesting access to your site via their browsers will be able to view your website almost immediately with the shortest possible delay.

XI) Tightened Security
Another major benefit of a dedicated hosting server is that you can circumvent any security risks which may negatively affect your website if it is hosted on a shared server. Since numerous user accounts reside on a shared hosting server, it becomes somewhat easy for a user to upload a malicious virus-infected file or application, which if goes unnoticed by the installed antivirus, can affect your account as well. This cannot be exploited with a dedicated hosting server, in which you not only have an external hardware firewall to counteract intrusion attempts, but also have the ability to change access rights so as to strengthen the protection further. Because of this, with a dedicated server, you can enjoy a tension free sound sleep in the night being aware that no one can get access to your server at any cost.

XII) Maximum Access Speed Because of Unique IP Address
The availability of a dedicated IP address turns out to be another significant benefit of dedicated server hosting, in that when a visitor tries to access the website, it is identified almost immediately. The availability of a unique IP address with companies offering shared host
1000
ing packages is quite limited. Even those who do offer this feature usually cost more than those who do not. Since a standalone software has to be used on the shared hosting server to identify the partition to which the accessed URL belongs, consequently the access time is comparatively higher than with a dedicated IP address. Although this operation is typically pretty fast, it is likely to be slowed down owing to a large number of sites hosted on the shared server all of which have concurrent incoming requests. This does not happen in the case of a dedicated hosting server given that it does not need any translation software, with the result that the site loads at lightning speed.

XIII) Option to Install More Than One Hard Drives
The ability to install several hard drives on the server is another major benefit of a dedicated hosting server. An extra hard drive adds a great deal of redundancy to the system configuration, given that it can be used to backup the data on a regular basis, apart from the primary storage device. This adds a great deal of safety to your crucial business data and is available only with dedicated server hosting. One application of the secondary storage medium may be to protect any crucial data your web applications might be generating, such as your client credit card information. Moreover, the dedicated hosting provider may also give you the option of having a backup FTP account, the benefit of which is that you can reproduce critical content on it in parallel with the usage of your regular FTP account.

Conclusion
Given all the information offered in this article, it becomes pretty easy for you to pick a dedicated hosting provider which not only satisfies your requirements but is also cost-effective. At first, it may seem to be a bit difficult, however it becomes straightforward once the user is well-acquainted with the above mentioned points. There are plenty of ways for signing up with the right dedicated hosting company, and to be very frank, there is no specific line of action that may be adopted in order to identify the right one. Nevertheless, the important qualities and advantages of dedicated server hosting described in this article can go a long way towards the selection of the correct company.

External Storage Options

External storage offers a lot of benefits for companies and individuals. It means they can back up data and prevent catastrophically losing important or personal files; it means they can transport their data to other locations or systems and use them on the go; it means they can easily transfer files between gadgets and devices; it means they can keep data safe by encrypting it and hiding the storage device; it means they can share them with others or borrow files from other places; and it means they can save space on their computers’ hard drives. Everyone should have at least one form of external storage and would probably benefit from having several. Bellow are a list of the various options and their strengths and weaknesses.

Memory Cards – Sd memory cards (a popular make being SanDisk who make the SanDisk Ultra and SanDisk Extreme line) have the great advantages of being highly portable and compatible with a very large range of devices. Not only will memory cards work with most computers (those that don’t have in built memory card readers can use external memory card readers via the USB ports), but also with PDAs, phones, MP3 players and cameras – enabling users to quickly transfer files to their PC without needing wires. At the same time memory cards are cheap and reliable and will fit into any wallet or shirt pocket. SanDisk SD offer a range of memory cards, including the SanDisk Extreme range that allows up to 32GB of storage.

Online Storage – Online storage requires the user to set up their own domain name and from here they can then upload and download files as they wish (though some e-mail services offer quite a large amount of storage which can make a good alternative). Most web hosting providers will give the user unlimited storage meaning that there’s literally no limit to how much data they can store and retrieve online. At the same time however the transfer will be far slower with large files making it a fairly poor choice for video files and programmes etc. Online storage also needs updating once a year or once a month, and will leave the user unable to access their data where there is no internet connection.

Memory Pens – Memory pens such as SanDisk compact flash memory pens offer up to 256gb of storage in a portable and durable casing. This enables them to fit in pockets and on keyrings meaning you can keep a copy of your data with you
1000
at all times. While almost all computers can use memory pens (they simply plug in and play using the USB ports), unlike memory cards they cannot be used with smaller devices such as cameras. Look for SanDisk compact flash.

External Hard Drives – External hard drives offer the most space for storage and are the most secure making them perhaps the best option for straight forwards back up. However they are also more expensive and more difficult to transport making them not great as a method for transporting data.

Don’t forget to consider Memory cards as a viable and portable storage option. Sd memory cards are already used by many cameras.

Today we live in a digital world, and many of our important documents are stored and backed up on external hard drives. But if fire, flooding or other natural disasters occur, a hard drive offers very little protection from damage. Unless you have Sentry Safes Fire-Safe Waterproof Hard Drive. It boasts offering ETL Verified fire protection for 30 minutes up to 1550 degrees Fahrenheit, and is ETL Verified waterproof meaning that it is fully submersible in water for up to 24 hours.

Data has become one of the most valuable things that we own, and as such we need to protect it. Digital files include: photos, letters, financial details, music, genealogy, work documents, and so on, all of which we would be devastated to lose. So one must ask, just how good is this external storage device? In response to this question, the British TV show, The Gadget Show, put the 250gb version of this safe to the test. The show was about blowing things up, so they went the extra mile to test Sentry Safes claims of fire and water protection.

In the first test, the hard drive is placed in a pool of water. Here I noticed the first interesting thing, the hard drive floated. On the show, the female hostess said that the hard drive is encased in a super tough concrete based shell, but I had my doubts when I saw it float. So I checked out the Sentry Safes website and discovered that the Maxtor hard drive is sealed in a self-contained, injection molded case, what exactly it is made up of, I do not know. Back to the test, not only did they put the hard drive in a pool, but they then set off a small “depth charge” under the idea that it would subject the device to pressure and reveal any cracks or weaknesses that would let the water in. Needless to say, the Sentry Safes waterproof hard drive passed the test with flying colors.

Next, the drive was exposed to extreme heat, which is normally very bad for digital data. The protective shell that makes up Sentry safes fire resistant storage device is made with fire proof chemicals for added protection. The digital storage device was subjected to a propane fueled fire ball that continued to burn for awhile after ignition. When tested for damage, everything on the storage device was still intact.

Their last test was a shock test. Past experience of other similar tests have shown that electronics do not stand up well to severe shock and impact. This nifty hard drive was placed on top of 200 grams of gun powder and blown sky high. The hard drive was blown out of its protective case, but was still intact. When tested, all data survived. The hosts of The Gadget Show were very surprised and impressed, they had never seen anything like it before.

For all this protection, you might expect something a bit monstrous, but it really isn’t much bigger than a standard external device. It measures only 10.5″ high, just over 13″ wide and just under 7″ deep. It will work with both Windows and Mac based computers, using a normal USB cable. It is a sharp looking hard drive with a durable, high gloss silver finish. Some of its extra security features include password protection and data encryption. And if you do experience a fire, flood or other disaster, Sentry Safes has a Data Recovery Support Program. This basically means that they will retrieve all the data on your damaged Sentry Safes Fire-Safe Waterproof Hard Drive, save it onto a new one and send you the new drive with all your precious data intact!

So, when thinking about purchasing Sentry safes to protect your physical valuables, don’t overlook the importance of your digital data!

MJ writes for ClickShops Inc., where you can find a great selection of Sentry safes at http://www.gunsafes.com.
